3rd episode of The Newsroom… now we’re getting warmer ;)

So… the way I feel about “The Newsroom” is eerily reminiscent of how I felt about Obama circa 2008. Both imperfect but stunningly artful & full of optimism/audacity. Hoping the outcomes are slightly less disappointing this time around.

He crammed into that hour episode a whole semester (or two) worth of one of my journalism & broadcasting classes in college.

#truestory: TV (the airwaves) do legally belong to the people (because it is a limited resource of the commons… no one can truly “own” it & there are limited #s of frequencies for broadcast. Back then, the broadcasting ethos / broadcasting agencies were required to provide a public service (like news) in order to have the “privilege” of “owning” stations. In other words, more like PBS than Fox. But that “hour” of public interest broadcasting has turned into the farces we call the “news” today, and as the episode pointed out, the laws were shortsighted.

Ok, I’ll stop there before I keep ranting on & on about broadcasting history,  but plese go look it up & read more about it… fascinating stuff! (esp if you’re interested in media studies).
